“Every reader finds himself. The writer’s work is merely a kind of optical instrument that makes it possible for the reader to discern what, without this book, he would perhaps never have seen in himself.” – Marcel Proust
The book was small, hard-covered, with a broken binding. My grandmother held it carefully as she told me the book had belonged to my mother when she was my age. She had discovered it when she was cleaning out “the little house” – a small cottage on the back of their property filled to the brim with heirlooms spanning generations – and she thought I might like to have it.
The book was Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I had no idea then what the story was about. Read more . . .

Little Women! My mom read it to me when I was little, and I’ve loved and re-read it ever since. I’ll read it to H when he’s big enough. Funny — last night Mr. O and I were watching friends while I got some crafting done, and it was the episode in which Joey reads Little Women. One of the sweetest scenes in tv history, I think.

I’m so glad you like it too, Carolyn! That’s a wonderful idea to read it to H — maybe I ought to read it to my son. We are enmeshed in The Lord of the Rings trilogy right now — yes, I am reading the entire thing ALOUD. There ought to be an award for that….. I can’t remember the Friends episode you mentioned, I’ll have to look it up. Thanks so much for stopping by, for reading, and leaving something sweet behind. You take care. 🙂

Right? I’m telling you, it should be worth something! 😉
Best things is sharing it with him for the first time, because I’ve never read them until now. So that alone is worth the effort.

Oh my gosh! LOVE LOTR! You’ll love, love, love it. I have so many favorite lines from the books. I know it takes awhile to get out of the Shire, but after that, you’re golden.

And yes, I do love it. Can’t wait for you to be able to share it with H.
